Diablo is an action role-playing game series that has been popular for many years. In November 2019, Blizzard announced the fourth installment in the franchise: Diablo 4. One of the key features of Diablo games has always been the story, and Diablo 4 promises to be no different. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at one aspect of that story: Smoldering Ashes.
In Diablo lore, Smoldering Ashes refers to a time when demons threatened to overwhelm Sanctuary, which is the setting for the Diablo games. The demon invasion was ultimately defeated by a group known as The Horadrim (also referred to as “horadic mages”). This event is said to have taken place many centuries ago.
Fast forward to Diablo 4, and it seems that Smoldering Ashes could be making a return. During gameplay footage shown at BlizzCon 2019 (where Diablo 4 was announced), players were given a glimpse of an area known as The Dry Steppes. In this area, players can find something called The Ashen Coliseum – an arena that appears to have been built on top of ancient ruins.
The official description of The Dry Steppes on Blizzard’s website reads: “The Dry Steppes have long been home only to Kehjistani nomads and ruthless mercenaries who will do anything for coin…but rumblings from afar hint at an encroaching threat.”
Based on this description and what we’ve seen in gameplay footage so far, it seems possible that demons may once again threaten Sanctuary in some way during Diablo 4’s story – potentially tying into the events of Smoldering Ashes.
Of course, there’s still much we don’t know about how exactly Smoldering Ashes will fit into the larger narrative of Diablo 4. It’s also worth noting that Blizzard has not officially confirmed whether or not demons will play a significant role in the game’s story, though it seems likely given the series’ history.
Regardless, Diablo fans are anxiously awaiting more information about the story and world of Diablo 4. Smoldering Ashes is just one piece of the puzzle, but it’s an intriguing one that leaves plenty of room for speculation and excitement.
