Sea of Stars gameplay

Sea of Stars is an upcoming turn-based RPG being developed by Sabotage Studio, the creators of The Messenger. Inspired by classic RPGs from the 90s, Sea of Stars aims to capture the nostalgia and essence of that era while introducing its own unique features and gameplay elements.

In Sea of Stars, players embark on a magical journey set in a vibrant world filled with mystery and adventure. The game follows the story of two Children of Solstice, Valere and Zale, who are destined to prevent an evil entity known as The Fleshmancer from consuming all light in the world.

Battle System

The battle system in Sea of Stars blends traditional turn-based combat with innovative mechanics. Players control both Valere and Zale simultaneously during battles. Each character has their own set of abilities that can be used strategically to overcome enemies.

The key mechanic in battles is Harmony Points (HP). HP is accumulated through successful attacks or by using specific abilities. Once enough HP has been gathered, Valere and Zale can perform powerful combo attacks that deal massive damage to enemies.


The game features an expansive open-world environment for players to explore. As they progress through the story, players will unlock new areas containing hidden treasures, secret dungeons, and challenging puzzles. Exploration plays a crucial role in uncovering forgotten lore and discovering new abilities for Valere and Zale.

Ancient Music System

An interesting aspect of Sea of Stars is its Ancient Music System (AMS). By utilizing AMS at certain points within the game world known as “Song Circles,” players can manipulate reality itself. Each song has unique effects that assist in solving puzzles or accessing previously inaccessible areas.

  • Serenade of Souls: Summons ethereal spirits to aid in battle.
  • Melody of Light: Illuminates dark areas and reveals hidden passages.
  • Harmony Anthem: Elevates characters, allowing them to reach higher platforms or float across gaps.
  • Rhythm’s Requiem: Manipulates time, affecting the behavior of certain enemies or objects.

Graphics and Sound

The visuals in Sea of Stars are breathtaking, featuring hand-drawn backgrounds and character sprites. The game combines pixel art aesthetics with modern lighting effects, creating an atmosphere that truly captures the essence of a fantasy RPG. The accompanying musical score is equally impressive, with a soundtrack composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, known for his work on Chrono Trigger and Xenogears.
